Xradar Precision Concrete Scanning for University Renovation Project

Background: A contracting firm hired Xradar to perform high-precision concrete scanning on a 4-6" slab-on-grade at a local university. The area was slated for full removal as part of a major renovation, but existing as-built drawings indicated a dense network of embedded conduits. To ensure worker safety and prevent costly damage, the client required an accurate subsurface map before proceeding with demolition.

The Challenge:  Due to the building’s age, the slab contained metallic conduits, which can often be misinterpreted as structural reinforcement by less-experienced operators. The primary concern was the extensive presence of conduits within the slab, as misidentification or accidental strikes could lead to safety hazards, delays, and expensive repairs. Additionally, some conduits were suspected to be live, further increasing the risk of electrical hazards. The client needed absolute certainty regarding the location, depth, and status (live or inactive) of each conduit before cutting into the slab.

Scope of Work: Xradar was tasked with scanning the entire affected area to precisely trace and map each embedded conduit. The objective was to provide the client with clear, reliable data to guide safe and efficient demolition while minimizing unforeseen complications.

Our Solution: For this project, Xradar’s highly trained technicians utilized advanced GPR scanning technology to locate, identify, and mark out all embedded objects. Collaborating closely with both the client and project consultants, we provided detailed subsurface mapping, including conduit locations, depths, and live status verification. This meticulous approach ensured that all stakeholders had the necessary information to proceed with confidence.

Methodology: Xradar’s expertly utilized advanced GPR for high-resolution subsurface imaging, differentiating between reinforcement and electrical conduits through signal interpretation and pattern analysis. We also verified conduit depth and determining whether they were live to mitigate potential electrical hazards. Marking all findings on-site for seamless communication with contractors and project managers.

Findings/Results: Xradar successfully mapped each embedded object within the slab, identifying conduit depths and live-status indicators. The client received a comprehensive report detailing:

  • A complete conduit layout with precise depth measurements.
  • Clear live/inactive status indications for each conduit.
  • On-site markings to facilitate safe demolition and cutting procedures.
